Your Rights as a Client

You have the right to be treated with dignity, respect, and cultural sensitivity at all times. You have the right to receive counseling services in a safe, professional, and confidential environment. You have the right to be informed of the counselor’s credentials, licensure, and scope of practice. You have the right to participate actively in your treatment, including setting goals and discussing treatment options. You have the right to ask questions about your care and receive clear, understandable responses. You have the right to receive information about fees, billing practices, and cancellation policies. You have the right to request access to your counseling records in accordance with Texas law. You have the right to request corrections to your record if you believe information is inaccurate. You have the right to refuse or discontinue counseling services at any time. You have the right to receive information about how to file a complaint or express concerns regarding services.

Access to Records

In accordance with Texas law, clients may request access to their counseling records. Requests must be made in writing and will be processed within the timeframe allowed by law. Certain information may be limited or withheld when disclosure could cause harm or violate confidentiality protections.

Confidentiality and Privacy

Your privacy is protected by state and federal laws. Information shared in counseling is confidential, with exceptions required by law, such as situations involving risk of harm to self or others, abuse or neglect reporting, or court orders. These limits to confidentiality will be discussed during the informed consent process.

Filing a Complaint or Reporting a Concern

If you have concerns about your care that cannot be resolved directly with your counselor, you have the right to contact the licensing board.

Client Responsibilities

Clients are encouraged to attend sessions as scheduled and provide timely notice if cancellation is needed, participate honestly and respectfully in the counseling process, communicate concerns, questions, or changes in needs, and follow agreed-upon policies related to attendance, payment, and communication.
