EMDR Therapy

Healing from the past while creating space for what comes next.
There are experiences we can understand logically and still feel emotionally. You may know that something happened in the past, yet find that certain memories, relationships, situations, or triggers continue to affect how you feel, think, or respond today.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach that helps the brain process distressing experiences and the thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and beliefs that may remain connected to them.
EMDR can be particularly helpful when you find yourself thinking, “I know this, but I still don’t feel it.”
At WillBridge Counseling, EMDR is incorporated into an individualized therapeutic process designed to help you heal from what happened, grow beyond the beliefs and emotional responses it created, and bridge the gap between where you have been and where you want to be.

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a structured psychotherapy approach that uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or other alternating left-right stimulation, while working with distressing memories, thoughts, emotions, or experiences.

Sometimes an experience has ended, but the emotional response connected to it remains very present. A memory may still bring up fear, shame, guilt, anger, sadness, anxiety, or negative beliefs such as “I’m not good enough,” “I’m not safe,” or “I should have done something differently.”

EMDR helps us work with those connections so that past experiences can be processed in a healthier and more adaptive way. The goal is not to erase a memory or convince you that what happened was acceptable. Instead, the goal is for you to remember the experience without continuing to experience the same level of emotional distress or allowing it to define how you see yourself today.

What does an EMDR session look like?

EMDR is more than eye movements. Treatment begins with getting to know you, understanding your history, identifying what you would like to work through, and making sure you have tools to manage difficult emotions before reprocessing begins.

When we are ready to begin processing, I will guide you through a structured process that allows you to briefly focus on aspects of a distressing experience while using bilateral stimulation. Throughout the session, we will notice the thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, memories, and associations that arise and allow your brain to continue processing the experience.

You remain awake, aware, and in control throughout EMDR. You can communicate with me, ask questions, slow down, or stop at any time.
EMDR does not require you to tell me every detail of what happened. We will talk enough for m

EMDR is not about forgetting. It is about remembering differently.
